 Most safety consultants come from one of two worlds: corporate compliance or the field. The compliance guys write programs that pass an audit and never make it to the crew. The field guys run crews and get buried the first time an operator drops a hundred-page checklist on the desk. Safety breaks at the seam between them — and that’s where nearly every incident I’ve ever investigated started.

I've worked both sides of that seam for nearly 20 years. I've built the programs that get companies approved by ExxonMobil, OXY, ConocoPhillips, Devon Energy, and Chevron, and I've stood on location making sure a crew could actually run them. I know what the auditor is grading. I know what your foreman can execute. And I know exactly where the two don't line up.
